Call for Applications and Papers: Summer School: „Social Movements in Global Perspectives- Past, Present and Future“, Institute for Social Movements (ISB) of the Ruhr-University Bochum, 1-12 September 2014

The Institute for Social Movements (ISB) of the Ruhr-University Bochum invites students to apply for the interdisciplinary Summer School “Social Movements in Global Perspectives – Past, Present and Future” which will take place at the Ruhr-University Bochum from September 1st to 12th, 2014.

The Summer School offers advanced students an opportunity to approach the topic of Social Movements in Global Perspectives from a range of different perspectives. It familiarizes participants with the fascinating field of social movements and its manifold forms of appearance like e.g. labour, human rights, feminist or anti-globalisation movements. The programme addresses the basic ideas and history of social movements as well as current aspects from a more sociological approach while taking into consideration political and economic perspectives at all times.

The Summer School in the format of a conference will bring together national and international scholars committed to the study of social movements. These experts will deliver keynotes and give presentations as well as discuss with students current positions of research in panel discussions and round table sessions. In the end of the conference national and international activists will engage themselves in round table discussions with students on practical aspects of social movements.

Participants have the opportunity to:

  • familiarize themselves with all important social movements in a global perspective approach the field of social movements from international and interdisciplinary perspectives
  • discuss their own research interests with renowned scholars and experts from all over the world- the USA, Australia, Hong Kong, India, the UK, Sweden, Italy or Greece
  • discuss with national and international activists the Arab Spring in Tunisia, Gezi Park Protests in Turkey or the Protests against the World Cup in Brazil.

The Summer School, primarily addressing students from the Ruhr Region, is open to a small amount of additional participants. The participation is free of charge, travel and accommodation costs are not covered.  As an output of the Summer School, participants are strongly encouraged to develop a paper on a selected topic within the field of social movements. Excellent papers will be discussed at a writing and publishing workshop at the end of September (September 24th-25th) and published, together with selected contributions of conference speakers, in the international journal „Moving the social„.
